Frequently Asked Questions
What is LASIK?
LASIK, or laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis, is one of many available options for reducing or eliminating your dependence on glasses or contacts. LASIK surgery involves the formation of a flap, whether with a fine automated instrument or with a Laser (bladeless LASIK), that reshapes the cornea, reducing and even eliminating any number of vision impairments, including myopia and astigmatism.
Who Should Perform LASIK Surgery?
LASIK is a corneal surgery and is best performed by a fellowship trained cornea specialist. Look out for the general, commercial ophthalmologist with no fellowship training who claims to be a "LASIK specialist". To keep things simple, ask your surgeon the following question: "Are you a fellowship trained cornea specialist?" If the answer is not an immediate and definitive "Yes", look elsewhere.
Am I a LASIK Candidate?
In order to determine your candidacy for LASIK surgery, you need to have a screening exam. During this office visit, which typically takes between 30-45 minutes, you will undergo special tests to determine whether you are a candidate for a laser vision correction procedure that is the safest and the most effective procedure for you.
I Am Aware of LASIK's Short-Term Benefits. But What Are Some Long-Term Effects?
Since its early introduction, millions of people have had LASIK surgery performed on their eyes. However, many people continue to worry about the long-term effects of the procedure. Specifically, these people are concerned about the risks of LASIK as compared to contact lenses. With more long-term studies of LASIK patients now available, the results are astoundingly positive. Reports of night vision difficulties, surgical complications, and dry eyes are rare, and usually very treatable. Of course, LASIK is still a medical procedure that caries certain risks and therefore needs to be done by a capable and conscientious surgeon.
